The new Veterinary School at Rowan University, situated on former farmland, will serve as the cornerstone of Rowan's expanded campus. Due to the tight site configuration and substantial program requirements, the building's footprint is designed as an offset from the site boundary. Critical hospital elements are located at grade level, while academic spaces are positioned above. To maximize the scenic views of the New Jersey countryside, the North end of the project expands vertically, creating a research tower. The building houses three distinct yet complementary programs: a veterinary school, veterinary hospital, and biomedical research labs. The integration of these disciplines fosters an environment of cross-disciplinary research and innovation, encouraging an exchange of ideas and strengthening each respective program. The research lab spaces, strategically located in the vertically expanded tower, are state-of-the-art, designed to maximize workflow and collaboration. Flexible workstations, advanced equipment, and integrated support facilities enhance productivity and well-being, while expansive views of the landscape foster a sense of connection with nature and a culture of excellence and innovation.
The facade of the veterinary hospital features pre-fabricated formed ACM panels, creating a variegated and dynamic appearance that changes with the angle of the sun throughout the day. Situated on a primary migratory flight path for birds, the project incorporates bird-safe fritted glass, ensuring safety for avian wildlife. At grade level, this frit pattern features custom iconography representing the animal patients, adding a unique and meaningful touch to the design.
The programming requirements were meticulously developed to accommodate a range of functions, including specialized laboratories, teaching spaces, and public areas that encourage interaction between the school and the surrounding community. The design integrates these elements into a cohesive whole, with an emphasis on flexibility and adaptability to future needs. One of the most distinguishing aspects of the project is its seamless integration with the natural landscape, which reflects a deep respect for the environment and enhances the educational experience by connecting students with the natural world. The result is a facility that is both a center of excellence in veterinary medicine and a vital part of the community fabric.
